A prolific playwright - an indomitable fighter for common sense, who had his own often surprising or shocking opinions about everything - not afraid to say what he thought and full of the wit needed to say it in an entertaining way: George B. Shaw is one of those literary figures who remain colourful and dear to us, even if part of his work, with its criticism of a past society, is somewhat outdated now.

‘Pygmalion’, by its mere charm, has survived with flying colours. The story of the poor flowergirl Liza who is used as an object for experiments by that fanatic of phonetics prof. Higgins - both surrounded by unforgettable characters such as Liza’s father Mr. Doolittle, with his big frame and little heart, and the faithful Freddy - was put on the stage again and again, all over the world.

Needless to say that the musical version ‘My Fair Lady’ did a lot to popularize the story in far wider circles. Shaw should have heard everybody whistle ‘The Rain in Spain’…
